The Coronavirus Connection: Links to the Global Wildlife Trade

Dr. Teresa Telecky, PhD, a zoologist and Vice President of Wildlife for Humane Society International (HSI), will explain the suspected origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its relationship to the wildlife trade.  She will also outline efforts to move governments around the world to ban wildlife trade, transport and consumption in order to reduce the risk of yet another pandemic of zoonotic origin. An overview will be given of federal and state legislation aimed at ending the wildlife trade and shutting down live wildlife markets in the US.

Special Needs Pets and Educational Outreach in Today's Veterinary Profession

Dr. Melissa Shapiro will share the story of her dog, Piglet, who was rescued from a hoarding situation. Due to irresponsible breeding, Piglet was born deaf and blind. His positive attitude towards facing his challenges inspires children and adults around the world to face their own challenges with a Piglet Mindset! Their Piglet Mindset Educational Outreach program lesson plans and curriculum for teachers, parents, scout leaders, and others are free for download on Piglet’s website, PigletMindset.org. Dr. Shapiro uses Piglet’s social media platforms to educate the public about the importance of spay/neuter and encourage adoption of special needs rescued animals.
