HSVMA is excited to host our 9th annual Animal Welfare Symposium for Students! The symposium will take place at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Frederick Douglass Patterson Hall, Room 2226. Our co-sponsor is the vet school's Animal Welfare Club. We are looking forward to an exciting line up of speakers addressing timely topics in animal welfare including spectrum of care, ethics in communication, managing rescue horses, chicken behavior, exotic animal medicine, and shelter medicine. We are also organizing a RAVS suture lab so vet students interested in participating in clinics can gain experience with suture techniques used in the field.

In the evening after the lectures and lab, we invite participants to attend an informal networking event at Boulder Tap House. Getting to know the speakers and fellow attendees in a relaxed atmosphere is always a great way to network with colleagues. We'll head over to the brewery located at 114 S Duff Ave. in Ames at 7pm. Be sure to ask the HSVMA staff for a drink token!
Although geared towards veterinary and veterinary technician students, veterinary professionals and affiliates are welcome to attend. CE credit will not be available. A certificate of attendance will be provided to attendees upon request.
Registration is FREE for all attendees! You do not have to be an HSVMA member to attend the symposium. The lectures will not be recorded so please plan to attend in person!

Animal welfare issues are complex and often highly emotional and contentious. This presentation covers the importance of promoting collegial, professional, productive conversations about challenging animal welfare topics. The use of moral deliberation that appropriately accounts for both scientific and ethical considerations embedded in animal welfare problems is illustrated, along with tips to facilitate inclusion of diverse perspectives and interests that reflect empathy for both animals and people. 9:00 - 9:50 am CST:
Best Practices for Horse Rescue: Horses in Transition
Presented by Dr. Stacie Boswell
Dr. Boswell will discuss caring for equines in transition who have medical issues, particularly managing a horse’s return to health after starvation or prolonged caloric deficiency. The Exotic Animal Trade: Implications for Animal Welfare, Wildlife Conservation and Invasive Species

The purpose of this session is to discuss the challenges associated with exotic pet species offered for sale in pet stores, online and in animal expos. Lecture portion in Frederick Douglass Patterson Hall, Room 2226, hands-on portion in room 1010 (Anatomy Lab). For more than twenty years, the Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS) program has worked to expand access to veterinary care in underserved rural communities where poverty and geographic isolation make regular animal health services unavailable. Their field training programs have provided life-changing service-learning opportunities for more than 8,200 veterinary and veterinary technician students and professionals. This RAVS suture lab is for students interested in participating in clinics. The lab will teach suture techniques used in the field. Materials will be provided. In order to increase one-on-one instructor time, the attendance for this lab will be capped at 30 students. Please indicate whether or not you'd like to attend when registering for the symposium. Attendance spots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and a waiting list will be started if more than 30 vet students are interested. Priority will be given to current veterinary students who are considering attending clinics.

A tour of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa will be held the following morning, Sunday, November 12, for a limited number of students. Transportation from the Iowa State campus will be provided.
