Amos Deinard, DVM, PhDHSVMA MINNESOTA STATE REPRESENTATIVE
Throughout his veterinary education, Dr. Deinard continued his interest in primate genetics, but focused on the evolutionary genetics of the Genus Macaca. During the third-year surgery course, he was one of the few in his class to opt out of terminal surgeries and participate in the Alternative Surgery training option: that is, non-terminal surgeries were performed only on shelter animals while the other, traditionally terminal, surgeries were performed on ethically-sourced cadavers of animals medically euthanized and obtained via body-will programs. After his veterinary graduation and a short stint in private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Deinard moved to New Orleans where he continued to work in private practice but also began working with local humane societies and other non-profit rescue groups. He was fortunate to leave New Orleans three months before Hurricane Katrina and return to the Bay Area to accept a position at the Berkeley East-Bay Humane Society, where he served as both the Medical Director of the shelter as well as the head veterinarian of their public veterinary hospital. In 2006, after their son was born, Dr. Deinard and his wife moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to family. In 2009, he opened a small neighborhood clinic, Nokomis Pet Clinic, to provide progressive medical care to the pets of owners who treat them as family members and understand and appreciate the value of the human-animal bond. He strives to provide high-quality medicine within an evidence-based context. Although private practice occupies the majority of his time, Dr. Deinard continues to work with several local rescue groups, still provides low-cost spay/neuter options to his clients with feral cats, and was one of the earliest local vets to decline declaw surgeries. Dr. Deinard and his family currently share their home with Fionnuala, a rescued Blue Tick Coonhound, who continues to work through her social anxiety issues and her tremendous fear of wood floors. Dr. Amos Deinard has been a member of the HSVMA since its inception in 2008. He is a 2001 graduate of the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to attending veterinary school, he received a bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Genetics and Anthropology. He then earned a PhD from Yale University in Molecular Anthropology, focusing on the evolutionary genetics of the great apes.
